The body of Polynices, Antigone's brother, has been ordered to remain unburied by Creon, the new king of Thebes. Antigone's faithfulness to her dead brother and his proper burial, and her defiance of the dictator Creon, seals her fate. Originally produced in Paris during the Nazi occupation, Anouilh's Antigone was seen by the French as theatre of the resistance and by the Germans as an affirmation of authority.

Includes an interview with translator Christopher Nixon and director Brendon Fox.

Also includes an interview with Ned Chaillet, a playwright, radio producer and director for the BBC. Chaillet is the former Deputy Drama Critic for the Times of London and the London theatre critic for the Wall Street Journal-Europe. He spoke with us about Antigone in the context of World War Two, the differences bewtween the original myth of Sophocles and the Anouilh version, and Anouilh's influence on later playwrights.

About the Author

Antigone

Anoulih's version of Antigone was adapted for the time in which he lived. It contains hidden symbols to, at the time, both get the book past the censors and give the french audience moral and courage to stand up to the Nazi's and follow their beliefs. The characters are adapted slightly to fit his version, ie Tieresas is left out and a nurse is introduced. He also had to adapt the personalities of the characters, for instance Antigone develops a whiny habit, and Creon is seen as a "good guy". This was also done in order to get the play by the sensors. It is a well-written play with rounder characters than the original. This version would be better read after reading the original.

A Most Difficult Play to Act

This version of Antigone written under German occupation is most difficult to act. Creon may be played as a reasonable man who has power forced upon him. And Antigone could be played as dangerous fanatic who flouts law that is necessary to preserve order in society on the edge of chaos. It is a masterpiece of abiguity. In certain ways the playwright has been more subtle than Sophocles. The problem that bothers most people who read the play is that the context of Sophocles is not the context of Anouilh. A director who doesn't understand this will try vainly to make Antigone into a Resitance fighter and Creon a a demonic Nazi. Doesn't work that way. This is a must read along side Sophocles.

Great study bible

I have had this version for many years and have been pleased with it. Recently, my husband wanted a study bible similar to mine. When I researched the newer versions, I realized that they did not have "red text" to indicate where Jesus was speaking. I searched and searched and found the same version as mine. He recieved his bible for Christmas and is very pleased with it.

Another great book in the Nightfall series

I received an ARC of this novella in exchange for an honest review.

I enjoyed hearing Zorin part of the story. It helped me to understand him and his choices. It was nice to learn more about his past and lost love. You got to see how his past helped define him. I look forward to seeing more of him in the next book.

A great novella for fans of this series!

Night of Nyx is the first novella in the Nightfall Chronicles. The events in the novella take place during those of the first half of House of Ravens. It's mainly told via Zorin's point of view, however some chapters are from Varian's point of view. Rather than seem redundant, Night of Nyx helps readers understand Zorin's character more. Varian's motives also seem a lot clearer, transforming his role significantly from that of the villian we saw him as in House of Ravens to that of a misunderstood hero.

Very little is left to desire in this novella. The story is fast-paced, informative, and an appropriate length for the amount of content being delivered.

I'd recommend Night of Nyx to fans of the Nightfall Chronicles and fans of science fiction, adventure, fantasy, and dystopian stories. It is appropriate for young teens, but does contain some graphic descriptions of violence.

Overall, I loved this glimpse into Zorin's soul. His actions and reactions make so much more sense to me now. He's much more likeable a character than I had imagined. Varian's character was the most changed for me, however. I couldn't help seeing the bad guy he made himself out to be, but now I know why for the most part, and that has truly reshaped him. I'm truly pleased with this novella and I can't wait for the next book.

This small novella is a perfect companion to the Nightfall Chronicles and for those who want to get to know Zorin more! The authors wrote a nice insight to the thoughts of Zorin, and also his reasons for helping both Scarlett and Nightfall. Pllus, I loved how the authors included the point of view of King Varian! It created this excitement that is making me crave the next book in the series! Personally, this is one of the best novellas I have read on the content of further character insight.

Porter and Teisberg Attempt to Fit a Square Peg into a Round Hole

Porter's theories on management are the bread-and-butter of management theory but he knows little about healthcare. It would be fantastic if his elegant theories worked for this industry, but they don't.

Serious flaws:
Authors: Care value should be measured by outcomes.
Reality: This is the fundamental problem with the healthcare market is that even the end-user of cannot fully assess the outcome not to mention the medical interventions' contributions to that outcome. Diseases recur and response to medical treatment varies so greatly that doctors rarely agree on the simplest courses of treatment. Only for the most common disease states will there be consensus on intervention. The authors compare the healthcare consumer to the institutional purchaser of computer systems, people that are generally IT experts. This is akin to comparing all patients to nurses.

Authors: Competition should exist at a national level.
Reality: Patients are cured locally because sick, pregnant, working people, etc., do not want to travel to another city to get specialized care. In fact, Guy David's studies show that proximity of less than half a mile holds more sway for patients than expertise. One can't purchase healthcare over the internet. Nor can patients in the bottom 50% of wage-earners travel to another metropolitan area every month to see a field expert.

Authors: Community-based hospitals repeatedly produce better outcomes than academic institutions
Reality: Patients with difficult-to-treat medical conditions are referred to or self-refer to academic medical centers so the sample group is biased.

It's no surprise that Porter missed some of the most obvious aspects of defining the problem. The acknowledgements section of the book contains few of the renowned experts in the field. The centers of knowledge do not lie in the management departments of Harvard or Darden. The authors seem to only have corroborated their theories with individuals from other industries, second-rate scholars, and politicians.

It was frustrating to have to read 411 pages of repetitive and ignorant text. While Porter has created groundbreaking theories in management (specifically of manufacturing and less-specialized service industries) he is attempting to fit his famous theories where they do not fit.

One must admire the attempt to write a comprehensive solution to the problem of the US healthcare system. However, it's an effort fraught with laziness and little introspection. The book, however, has a decent reference section. Either the authors did not read these papers themselves or chose to ignore the most salient points in the works of the field experts. If you want to real scoop, read Halvorson, Pauly, Danzon, Fisher, or anyone else who has studied this field for more than the authors' seven years.

Halvorson's Health Care Reform Now is a far superior book because it provides actionable remedies for the health care problem. Furthermore, Halvorson has 30 years of healthcare experience (compared to Porter's 3 years when he wrote this book). In addition, Halvorson has actually implemented his suggestions. Also, he cites credible organizations and publications that actually support his suggestions (RAND, IOM) whereas Porter cites and collaborates with organizations merely willing to collaborate with him (Dartmouth and Harvard - two institutions with very little research and health care specialists).

Halvorson's book may not have as thick a list of citations as Porter's; however, it makes its point more concisely and much more effectively than Porter's.

In Porter's defense, since writing this book, he has become more knowledgeable about health care and his arguments are starting to make more sense. Redefining Healthcare proves the complexity of health care by demonstrating how difficult it is to apply basic theories of other industries to fix the health care system.

Halvorson's book along with R. Lawton Burn's The Business of Healthcare Innovation are the two most valuable books on the American health care system. You can read them both in half the time it will take you to read Redefining Healthcare and you will be twice as knowledgeable.

Excellent analysis with some weak points

This book has received probably disproportionate attention due to Prof. Porter's notoriety as a strategic thinking theorist. There are better overall books on healthcare policy available. In particular I recommend the Bodenheimer/Grumbach books, one on healthcare policy and one on primary care, Dr. Arnold Relman's book, A Second Opinion, Strained Mercy, an outstanding and thorough analysis of healthcare economics with particular regard to Canada's healthcare system and Pricing the Priceless a more technically-oriented economic analysis by Prof. Joseph Newhouse, among other books.

I find the analysis of the USA healthcare system by Profs. Porter and Teisberg to generally be excellent, although I find it wanting in regard to their disparagement of a single-payer/single-insurer system and to their description and analysis of healthcare systems outside the USA. From my perspective private health plans play only a net negative role in the system. The authors' analysis of how the health insurance market works is quite good. However their recommendation that a system of private insurers should persist is refuted by their own analysis! A single payer/insurer system will not cure many problems of the USA system, as they clearly point out, but it does remove the inherently dysfunctional characteristics of private insurance, not least of which is its failure to meet the needs of the uninsured - a very large number - and its inherent propensity to exclude the very people who need coverage and care. The authors rightly point out that mandatory health insurance along with risk-pooling among insurers to spread the costs of those insured individuals who generate the highest costs is a "solution" to the current non-functioning system, but the same result, at lower cost and with much greater simplicity, can be achieved through a single payer/insurer.

The other key aspect of healthcare - how it is delivered - is ultimately more important than the financing/insurance side. The authors provide excellent analysis and recommendations in this regard. They correctly address the aspects of the healthcare market that prevent its functioning as a "competitive" market, specifically the abysmal lack of patient information on prices for services, on outcomes of actions by providers, comparative statistics on provider performance and similar. They also provide an interesting report by the Cleveland Clinic on outcomes, i.e. results, of the Clinic's heart surgery activity. They appropriately use this as an example of the kind of reporting that is needed.

The authors' analysis of healthcare systems outside the USA is skimpy and inaccurate in my opinion. The authors underplay the demonstrated efficacy of government-funded systems that outperform the USA system almost across the board in gross measures of outcomes (infant mortality and longevity) and vastly outperform the US system in regard to cost. They gloss over the fact that per capita costs in the USA are 2.5 times! the average per capita costs in other OECD countries. It is not as though the costs are say 10% above the average with comparable outcomes. They are 150% higher with worse outcomes. Instead of noting this and analyzing it thoroughly, the authors assert that waiting times and rationing of care are significant problems in those countries, assertions which are simply not borne out by the facts. Also the fact that (mostly) single-payer/insurer systems function well universally does not fit the authors' main thesis, so rather than revise the thesis based on this evidence they choose to ignore the evidence.

As a consequence of these limitations I rate the book with 4 stars rather than 5. Too bad, because most of the book is excellent.

About the Author
Eric A. Weiss, M.D., FACEP , is an Associate Professor of Surgery, Division of Emergency Medicine, and the Director of the Wilderness Medicine Fellowship at Stanford University. Dr. Weiss has been medical officer for the for the 1996 Summer Olympics, for National Geographic Society Expeditions, and in Nepal for the Himalayan Rescue Association. He is also the author of Wilderness 911, a back-country medical primer published by Mountaineers Books. Michael Jacobs, M.D., is the author of Survival at Sea, and the founder and program director for the Medicine for Mariners and Safety at Sea Conference. He is a USCG licensed captain and an avid sailor and kayaker.

Perfect for offshore cruising

The book offers clear directions and pictures. It is laid out so that you can flip to exactly the problem you are dealing with and read off the directions on one page instead of having to read a whole chapter when someone aboard is gouting blood everywhere. They also offer several different methods for each situation so if you don't have, for example, a SAM splint, you can still splint an injury using what you do have. I am glad to have this book on my boat.

Very important book, but printed way too small to read (especially for us older guys). Would have chosen a large (say 11" or more) format, and perhaps with a binder that lets the pages lie flat. I subsequently purchased the Kindle version for my iPad, which at least has a larger display

BEYOND First Aid, Comprehensive It Is...

I've been an offshore sailor since 1988, off and on, and in all that time I have been very frustrated by a wide range of largely mediocre medical references, to the point that I created my own First Aid Afloat reference (one page per issue, description/diagnosis, treatment, photo).

Prior to this book (WARNING NOTICE: this is a small book with SMALL print), my preference has been for The Onboard Medical Guide: First Aid and Emergency Medicine Afloat, in part because it comes with large pages, large print, and lots of white space. While this is the first NEW maritime medicine reference that meets my standards, I would have preferred a larger layout with larger print. This is a cargo pocket book.

Thank having been said, yesterday I had the pleasure of listening to Dr. Jacobs lecture the US Safety at Sea Seminar in Annapolis -- this is the premier US Sailing event of the year -- and today I had the further pleasure of an interactive session with the good doctor. I found him to not only be a superb professional, but the perfect gentleman whom I would recommend as a lecturer, mentor, and hands-on trainer.

Use Amazon's "Look Inside the Book" to review the extraordinary table of contents. Books such as Advanced First Aid Afloat, do not satisfy m; while I like the Red Cross online PDF including the color photographs, that could still do with some improvement. What wins me over completely, the small size and print aside, is the very long list of specifics (including multiple pages on fractures and multiple pages on internal injuries) along with the concluding appendices on drugs and assistance sources.

A Solid Sanskrit Grammar

This is probably the best all-round textbook for learning Sanskrit. Its closest
competitors are Goldman's "Devavanipraveshika" and Coulson's "Teach Yourself
Sanskrit". Maurer's work improves upon both in several ways: 1.It treats Sanskrit
in its Indo-European linguistic context, which will be a reason that many will
come to the study of the language. Previously Mayrhofer's "Sanskrit Grammar" or
Burrow's "Sanskrit Language", neither of which are pedagogic, had to be consulted
by a student interested in historical linguistics. 2.It presents the basic
grammar thoroughly with plentiful vocabulary and practice material for the
beginner. The reasons that prevent me from giving it five stars are these:
1. Price 2. Somewhat uninspired selection of readings. After all, with the
largest world literature, Maurer could have done better than relying on the old war-horse of "Nala and Damayanti", which continues the tradition of
Lanman's "Sanskrit Reader" of a century ago. Goldman, based as it is on the
"Ramayana" excels in this respect, as does Coulson which builds up to an
appreciation of Kalidasa. Few students these days will be satisfied with the
soupy Nala tale when the Bhagavad Gita, the Kama Sutra, the Upanishads and so
many more can be read in its place. Nonetheless, this is a highly recommended book for those who want a sensible, traditional grammar.

Best book for beginners

I teach Sanskrit in Canada, and I've tried using many different textbooks. My goal is to give the student a basic overview of the major components of Sanskrit as quickly as possible, and teach further using authentic Sanskrit literature. This book does exactly that. Instead of teaching grammar topics in the conventional order, it introduces advanced topics right at the beginning in a simplified way, so that students get used to recognizing their usage in context. It also has more thorough explanations of grammar topics than any book I've seen, and uses familiar English examples for comparison. excellent primer

i've been studying sanskrit on my own for 25 years and i own about a half dozen primers. this is an excellent primer, lots of useful charts and information. the pace of the lessons is reasonable for beginners, though wish the translation exercises were worked out maybe at the back of the book so student could check his/her work. two non-content problems: at $65 it's too pricey, and because of the number of pages (ca 850) the binding is thick and it's hard to keep the book open when working the exercises.

Quality Improvement, Simplified

I purchased this book for a class, and I must say it is one of the most useful textbook purchases I have ever made. It is written in a straightforward manner that effectively explains a variety of concepts useful for thinking about quality improvement. It is also extremely easy to read due to thoughtful use of examples to explain otherwise abstract concepts as well as an excellent layout. I would recommend this both as an adjunct to a class and as a good read for someone interested in quality improvement who is not taking a class.

Past is past

My mama was an avid reader. I remember her speaking of the flood and the blood saying, "If you want to know about your mama and her beliefs read the flood and the blood." For many years I have searched for this book. I did not have the through part is why I couldn't find it. I have falling short in giving God credit for who I am and where I am today. And I hold onto my past. I forgive others but I fall short in forgiving myself. I am a work in progress. This book in for those who believe and those who don`t. It is about leaving the past behind moving forward without judgement .
