A very good introductory geology book

Geology for dummies is well-written and follows a straightforward approach that favors being clear over being overly complicated. I should emphasize that this is not an in-depth geology text, rather it presents a very assessable introductory overview of the subject. It presents the material without any mathematics or complex formulas, although simple chemical notation is utilized in places. The publisher's information says that the book tracks a basic introductory college level course, but I think that it is quite suitable for a high school student. It is also excellent for self-study, which is my interest. Like all "for dummies" books, this one contains a lot of illustrations (one on every page or so). I found that these illustrations were one of the best features of the book. They are very well done and really clarify the concepts being described in the text. For instance, they include things like -
- cross sections of the earth showing how it is made up,
- how seismic waves are used to investigate this structure,
- mineral crystal structures,
- continental drift,
- how geologic structures are formed
- how erosion alters these structures
- a chart of the geologic time scale
- numerous illustrations of dinosaurs
In addition, the book also contains 8-pages of color photographs printed on high gloss paper. These photographs show large structures such as the Grand Canyon and more detailed features such as rock types and fossils.

The book is divided into six sections -
1) Studying the Earth. This section provides a general overview of the science of geology. It covers the general ideas of modern geology - the principles of superposition, original horizontality, lateral continuity and cross-cutting relationships.
2) Elements, Minerals and Rocks. The chapters in this section provide a basic introduction to mineralogy and the chemistry of minerals. It also describes some of the basics of atomic theory, which are used to describe how and why oxides, sulfides and other minerals form.
3) One Theory Explains it all - Plate Tectonics. While plate tectonics is mentioned briefly in the first section, this section describes it in more detail.
4) Superficially Speaking - about Surface Processes. This section is about erosion due to water and glaciers.
5) Long, Long Ago, in a Galaxy Right Here. Geology is discussed in terms of geologic time in this section. It includes sections on radioactive isotopic dating and tree ring dating. This section also includes some basic paleontology, how fossils are used to date rocks, and theories of mass extinctions.
6) The Part of Tens. This section (actually only a short chapter) deals with ten geologic hazards, such as earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions.

This is a five-star book that should get a high school student interested in science, supplement a basic geology text and provide any interested reader information on the structure and workings of the earth.

Excellent For Those Who Know Nothing About Geology

I am one of those who know virtually nothing about geology. Though I've never taken a geology course while in college, I tended to attract geology majors. Nothing like going on a hike and watching your date lick rocks along the way (pg. 64 covers that behavior). And later I ended up marrying a geologist who helped me review this book.

For me, I find it perfect in that it gives a short discussion of many topics. If I want to learn more about a topic I have many college geology text books (my husband's) to refer too. He says it's great that many topics of geology are covered in this book, however it's like a Reader's Digest condensed version of geology. He says there is just too much information about Geology to adequately cover in a single book but that this Dummy's book is fine for those who are interested in learning some about geology but would rather not get very deeply into it. It is not, according to him, the book to get if you are planning on majoring in geology or expect it to get you easily through a geology course, but it should help you decide if you want to major in geology or not. And it clearly states on page one in the introduction:

"In Geology for Dummies, you can start anywhere. this book is written as an introduction to the most common topics in geology"...

So, I think it's a great book to get if you just want to know about basic geological topics.

And basic geological topics are fine with me. Since you can "Look Inside" and see the table of contents you should get a good idea of what this book discusses. It's packed full of information as far as I'm concerned. And there are a few pages in the middle of the book with color photographs. It's set up in the standard Dummies way with icons for "remember", "technical stuff", "tip", and "warning!", plus it includes some humor along the way. You don't need to be a science nerd to understand the content. It's written in a very readable way for the non-scientific minded to understand. I like that science can be written a in lighter, more interesting context than the dry style of many textbooks.

Overall, I find this to be an excellent introduction to Geology, and my geologist husband approves it too, but with the caveat that it IS ONLY AN INTRODUCTION and not a major source of geological information.

Good introduction for novices

I tend to stay away from "Dummies" and "Everything About" books because they are often too simplistic and I don't like the poor paper quality. Geology for Dummies is simple but not too simplistic. It has enough basic information for someone with little science background, but still manages to get in more advanced, but easily understood, information as well. It is certainly not for someone who wants a thorough understanding of geology but it is a very nice introduction. You won't be able to go out and identify all the rocks after reading this, but you will have a better understanding of how the surface of our planet and the different type rocks were formed. It covers several topics (you can view the Table of Contents in "Look Inside" above) including some I had not expected but were interesting and welcome, providing a better and more thorough understanding of this topic. Like most of these books, the majority of the illustrations are hand (or computer) drawn, but are very well done. It has eight pages of beautifully done color photographs as well. The writing style is down to earth (no pun intended) and easy to understand. There is humor (as always in the Dummy books) and occasional obscure but interesting facts that you generally won't find in a standard geology text. If you have an interest in how our beautiful planet was formed, but only need a basic understanding at this point in your studies, I would highly recommend Geology for Dummies.

Just a bunch of quotes

I thought I was going to be getting an actual book with a lot of good arguments, backed up by political insight and observations. But it turns out, this book is just a compilation of a bunch of Ann Coulter's quotes from previous articles, books, or lectures. I read about half the book, then got bored from brain destimulation. For my first Coulter book, this was a big disappointment.

Very well done, of course. It's Ann Coulter! It's very witty and I love that she's reading the book herself. It doesn't flow as much as her other books because as she has said, "It's more of a quote book." So it's very funny quotes here and there for the conservative republican that needs a good honest laugh while hearing the truth!

Not a real book: buy her other works

I'm probably Ann's biggest fan, but this is not a real book. It is a collection of quotations from her earlier books and other sources. While the idea of providing her enemies a reference volume so they can quote her more accurately is fun, it makes for dull reading. The best parts are the introductions to each section that are new materal.

The research, including 2000 questionnaires, 200 interviews, and an extensive bibliography, indicates that men and women across many cultures have evolved a psychobiological response to sexual relationships. Men want young, beautiful women and casual sexual relationships; women look for committed relationships with men of wealth and status. Even among "liberated" individuals, these statements hold true. Townsend, a professor of anthropology who has published many scholarly articles, explores why this hasn't changed despite the changing sex roles and economies of modern American society. Forget the sexual and feminist revolutions, says Townsend; men and women want what they have always wanted over the decadesand centuries and millennia, for that matter. In a nutshell, posits Townsend (Anthropology/Syracuse Univ.), men who engage in dating and mating are looking primarily for physical attractiveness in women; women seek men who have status and earnings power and who will emotionally and materially invest in them. Such proclivities, he argues, are largely hard-wired into us by evolutionary psychology. Thus, for example, studies show that men are far more easily aroused by visual stimuli, while womens fantasies deal more with men who will provide security and caring (thus, pornography is overwhelmingly purchased by males, romance novels by females). Such proclivities are little affected by some womens newfound economic status; even economically self-sufficient or otherwise high- achieving women, such as medical students, often resist dating lower-status men, even if theyre perceived as handsome. Nor does marital status or gender orientation play much of a role (Townsend cites studies that reveal that the differences between what gays and lesbians seek in lovers are even more pronounced than between male and female heterosexuals). But his book suffers from methodological (not to mention stylistic) problems. Townsends sample of interviewees is somewhat skewed (a quarter of these 200 were medical students, while another quarter were Mexican-Americans); some of his statistics are meaningless (Blumstein and Schwartz found that women in their twenties with three children have a 72 percent chance of remarrying, while women in their thirties with no children have a 60 percent chance); and he also is too focused on the macro picture; there is almost nothing here about how individual psychology or cultural conditioning affects the search for, and selection of a partner. women want status; men want beauty --

If you're a woman over 30, less than a perfect ten, and wondering whether you'll ever find a good man, look no further. This book will confirm that you're doomed to spinsterhood. All men are looking for that beautiful twenty-year old blonde with the perfect body. Seriously, the basic premise of the book is that men prize a woman's youth & physical attractiveness first and foremost (and almost to the exclusion of any other traits -- a woman's economic status, occupation, and to some extent, personality, are largely irrelevant to men). In choosing sexual partners and mates, men focus on physical attractiveness. Period. Women, on the other hand, look for economic and professional status and investment. A woman of any socioeconomic level wants to "marry up" and will often prefer to have a primary relationship with a higher status man who is married or involved with multiple women than to have a primary monogomous relationship with a lower status man. Men want to minimize their investment; women want to maximize a man's investment. Townsend explains why musicians and athletes have often had hundreds of sex partners, and typically have ten to twenty women whom they can call at any given time for commitment free, investment-free sex. Townsend creates serious doubt that men in high status positions will be faithful in relationships.
It seems that the vast majority of the individuals interviewed & quoted are twenty-something medical students, becoming aware of their status for the first time. They will have nothing to do with the "unattractive, overweight" women in their med school class, particularly when the universe of "chirpies" (nurses, therapists, etc.) are available & interested. The other group of men interviewed are, on the whole, high status men, many of whom engage in polygyny (multiple relationships during the same time frame with a variety of women).
This book was interesting, and filled with quotations from the interviewees, although it went on & on & on --reinforcing the conclusion that draws in the first few chapters, quoting one med student who sounds very similar to the next med student. Men want youth & beauty. Women want investment & status.
My guess is that some readers would bristle at the generalizations in this book -- though they undoubtedly ring true. The text doesn't contain a significant amount of commentary & editorialization; it just presents the interview results in a readable fashion.

Great Evolutionary Psychology Primer

When I started this book, I struggled to push through it. The prose is very, very dry. I don't mean that the book was overly technical or scientific, because I read many books that are technical and scientific, yet the prose is not so dry. What made the prose dry is that it was just a simple recitation of facts, especially in the beginning. The flat, recitation of facts was broken up by anecdotal case studies that illustrated the concepts just described.

What made the beginning of the book extra tortuous for me was also that I read a lot of evolutionary psychology books, so the information I was finding was all stuff I already knew. After reading the first quarter of the book, I was ready to just throw in the towel on the book but I persevered.

Lo and behold, after getting through the first quarter of the book, it got much better. The anecdotal case studies appeared more frequently, which made the prose seem less dry, and the scientific findings started going beyond the realm of very basic evolutionary psychology, and actually taught me a lot of things I didn't know already and provided new ways of interpreting the things I did know.

By the end of the book I was enjoying the reading experience very much and it ended on a very strong note, even providing relationship advice and ways of applying everything that had been discussed so far.

I highly recommend, and I would suggest making it a third of the way through the book before deciding whether or not it's for you.

Love is the result, not the cause

John Marshall Townsend's seminal book answers Freud's famous question "What do women want?" In ten chapters Mr. Townsend addresses various topics pertaining to male-female relationships: sexual differences between the two genders; what is sex what is love; what is sexually attractive to women in men; when choosing partners for marriage what men and women look for; men's criteria for choosing partners; whether there is a shortage of available men for dating; as women age and achieve professional success why their chances of dating decline; what both genders seek in marriage; whether women can have sex like men without emotional commitment; who does majority of household chores; whether women like dominant men; why male medical students don't date female medical students; whether men and women are alike in other parts of the world and, lastly, how to cope with evolutionary differences between the two genders. While responding to the above questions, Mr. Townsend convincingly debunks the notion that men and women contribute equally to the relationship and demonstrates there is always an overlap in terms of contribution and how it benefits the relationship. His analysis underscores the difficulty with egalitarianism and how fanciful expectations often undermine relationships. To wit, if something is rational doesn't mean it's preferable. The book counsels the readers to be committed to their relationship; to do things together; accept gender differences in task preferences; ignore the idea grass is greener on the other side; have lower expectations; know each partner must sacrifice some aspects of their personality for the success of relationship; remember in marriage some conflict and disappointment is inevitable and to restrict the desires to stray by avoiding to vent them. An engrossing book with potential to help a lot of people!

In this book, Tarun covers every area of TFS from source control management, work item management, testing, and build/release automation to administration. I enjoyed this book because Tarun goes beyond the basics of TFS 2015, digging into advanced topics such as extended TFS with the TFS Object Model and REST API. Tarun also covers more advanced TFS administration (i.e., analyzing and configuring the database-level test retention policies, managing CodeLens, and analyzing log files for diagnose common issues).

As a long-time TFS user, having performed countless upgrades from all versions, including Visual Source Safe, I still found hidden gems in this book. I particularly enjoyed the chapters on automated testing integration and build/release vNext. I highly recommend this book to anyone that administers, manages, supports, or uses TFS on a regular basis.

TFS 2015 Cookbook, really interesting

I read this book in one week, and it's really interesting.
This is not a book of classic TFS, its cookbook approach makes it different from others.
This treats almost every theme TFS but also on key topics of DevOps as cotinuous delivery on TFS 2015, but most also applies to VSTS.
The topics addressed are presented in the order of using TFS:
Beginning with the creation of a project team, the management of source code for TFVC and Git.
Then he addresses topics within builds, tests and Release using the latest version of Release which is integrated with TFS (then Update 2 RC1 or VSTS)
Finally the last themes are managing the TFS and TFS extension part with APIs and customization of work item form.
All subjects in the form of cookbooks respond to real issues encountered daily when using or administering TFS.
This book is therefore aimed both to administrators, developers, or even at Ops.

I recommend you buy it, read it and practice each of these cases.

This is a great book for people who want to introduce DevOps practices into their daily work, but don't have much time to dig all the details of how to do it; with the recipes delivered on this book you can quickly start using TFS/VSTS ranging from how to setup a team project, managing source code repositories, tracking work and building , deploying and testing your apps all in an integrated and cohesive manner.

If you want to go beyond it will also help in managing TFS and extending it to integrate with other tools

Let's be clear this is not a reference book or a tutorial, but a great practical how to; even if you are new to TFS/VSTS you can use this book to learn in a practical how to get most of TFS/VSTS and how you can managed your process with it end to end.

This book gets you playing without the problems of reading sheet music. This is my son's favorite practice book because he can play the songs so quickly. He's already playing "Careless Whisper" , "Pink Panther", "Ain't No Sunshine When She's Gone" and a few others. Really amazing to me. If you want to make fast progress then get this book. Also, you can watch Mark Archer and his teaching style on youtube. The only downside to this book was that it did not include the cd that is talked about in the book. My son would play the songs on youtube so he had an idea of how the song should sound. But, I still give this book 5 stars!

It is a good book, but the only problem is that throughout the book Mark Archer refers to a cd, but the book came with out a cd, and because the book was shipped from USA, no chance of getting one.
That's the reason for low rating.

The Finest English Lyrical Poetry - Highly Recommended

English lyrical poetry is among the world's finest poetry. Many years ago Francis Turner Palgrave, a professor of poetry at Oxford, compiled a highly respected anthology of English lyrical poetry.
I clearly recall my excitement in my first reading of Palgrave's collection. I have since become familiar with several other good anthologies, but Palgrave's remains my favorite.
Palgrave's remarkable anthology of English lyrical poetry is found with various titles: "The Golden Treasury of the Best Songs and Lyrical Poems in the English Language", or "Palgrave's Golden Treasury from Shakespeare to the Present", or "Palgrave's Golden Treasury", or simply "The Golden Treasury". Sometimes one title is found on the book cover and another on the title page.
Palgrave's "The Golden Treasury" has remained continuously in print since 1861, with Oxford University Press editions in 1907, 1909, 1929, 1940, 1964 (Section V added), and 1994 (Section V1 added). New printings occur every few years.
Today this remarkable anthology is now nearly 700 pages. The font size is large and easy to read.
Palgrave's somewhat sparse footnotes are only available for Sections I-IV. Many readers may need a good dictionary for occasional archaic words and unfamiliar references to Greek and Roman mythology. I have found it quite helpful and entertaining to have a copy of Bulfinch's The Age of Fable nearby. Whichever edition and printing that you acquire, I hope you enjoy Palgrave's selections as much as I did. Cheers.

An Excellent Compilation

I bought a copy of this book on behalf of my uncle Ivor, who wanted it on behalf of a friend living abroad, and had difficulty obtaining a copy of this out-of-print book. Before my uncle sent the book on, he opened it up and browsed through it, and was so delighted with it, that he wanted a copy for himself!

Amazon keeps asking me to review it, and so I passed the request on to my uncle, who now has his own copy. Here's his description.

"Oscar Williams has supplemented in Books 5-7 some of the poets not included by Palgrave, such as John Donne an other metaphysical poets, and taken his selections into the 2oth century. He has included T. S. Eliot, Yeates, Auden, Wilfred Owen, Frost, and Dylan Thomas, among others.

Good stuff

There's lots of good stuff in this book. It's very sturdy and has a poem for every mood.

But sometimes, it felt like it was missing some of the classic poems I was looking for, but I'm not a hardcore English or poetry studier. Maybe it was okay that it was like that.

I positively loved the original sections that Palgrave chose, which are in the beginning, rather than the more modern poems.

I liked it. I recommend it as a good starting poetry anthology. =)
