Might be useful to some, but not me.

This is the last "Teach Yourself XXX..." book I will ever buy. I didn't like the one about C++ I had fifteen years ago either. The authors take several pages to explain something that could have been said in just a paragraph or two with examples. The problem is that they swamp you with words like encapsulation, superclass, constructors, overloading, templates, and so on, up front expecting you to comprehend all of that before they start teaching the language. I would rather learn the language first, then the terminology later.
Like many other programming books, this one is almost 700 pages long, way too long. I am a retired computer programmer well versed in several assembly languages, Fortran, and C++, so I already know the basics. I just want the learn the language. If they can't tell me everything I need to know in less than 400 pages, then forget it.

Believe it's correct technically, multiple editorial errors though

Decent material, though it seems like some material was kept from previous versions that doesn't apply. One example: location 5658 (not sure the page, I have the Kindle version) he refers to a method from the previous chapter that isn't actually in the previous chapter. While I think the technical information is correct, this and a few similar simple errors that it seems like an editor should have caught make me worry.

A secular, not a religious phenomenon, a literary genre with fixed rhetoric effects, the funeral oration was inextricably linked to the epainos--praise of the city--rather than to a ritualized lament for the dead as is commonly assumed. Above all, the funeral oration celebrated the city of Athens and the Athenian citizen.Loraux interprets the speeches from literary, anthropological, and political perspectives. She explains how these acts of secular speech invented an image of Athens often at odds with the presumed ideals of democracy. To die in battle for the city was presented as an act of civic choice--the "fine" death that defined the citizen-soldier's noble, aristocratic ethos. At the same time, the funeral oration cultivated an image of democracy at a time when there was, for example, no formal theory of a respect for law and liberty, the supremacy of the collective and public over the individual and the private, or freedom of speech.This new edition of The Invention of Athens includes significant revisions made by Nicole Loraux in 1993. Her aim in editing the original text was to render this groundbreaking work accessible to nonspecialists. Jay M. Pasachoff is the Field Memorial Professor of Astronomy and the Chair of the Astronomy Department at Williams College. He is the author of the Peterson Field Guide to Stars and Planets, as well as numerous textbooks and trade books on astronomy, weather, and more.

The moon is often the most prominent object in the nighttime sky. The moon is somewhat more than one-quarter the diameter of the earth. This makes it the largest substantial satellite (moon) in the solar system in comparison to its parent planet. (Three moons of Jupiter and one each of Neptune and Saturn are physically larger than our moon; Pluto’s small moon Charon is nearly half Pluto’s size.) The moon orbits the earth every 271?3 days with respect to the stars. But during that time, the earth and moon have moved as a system about 1?12 of the way in their yearly orbit around the sun. So if the moon at a certain point in its orbit is directly between the earth and the sun, 271?3 days later it has not quite returned to that point directly between the earth and the sun. The moon must orbit the earth a bit farther to get back to the same place with respect to the line between the earth and the sun. The moon reaches this point in a couple of days, making the synodic period of the moon equal to 291?2 days. (The synodic period is the interval between two successive conjunctions — coming to the same celestial longitude — of two celestial bodies, in this case conjunctions of the moon and sun as observed from the earth.) It is the synodic months that are taken into account in lunar calendars.

This is an awesome book, but theitem shipping as of 9/12/16 is NOT the addition listed. The description shows it has time sensitive data through 2020'. (They have now shipped me 2 incorrect versions). If you do not need a current version, order now. If you expecting the 14th printing as listed, then wait. This book is the best tool you can have for astronomy. It is well thought out and has everything you could possibly need.

This is one of my "desert island" books.

If I had to choose a small number of books to take with me into exile on some deserted island somewhere, this would definitely be one of them (and offhand I'm not sure I can name any others).
An entire astronomy library packed into a single portable field guide, Jay Pasachoff's entry in the Peterson Field Guide series is a delightful introduction to, and reference for, the universe revealed in the night sky.
If you have any interest in astronomy at all, you can always find something in here to look at or just to sit and ponder about.
Besides the obvious things like monthly star charts for both northern and southern hemispheres, the book contains a complete 52 chart atlas of the sky put together by Wil Tirion with notes on objects in each chart, clever finder charts and tables for the planets for a ten year period, history and lore of the naming of the constallations, many, many photographs of astronomical objects taken by Hubble and other telescopes, an atlas of the moon, and many enlightening charts and tables of things like details of the brightest/nearest stars, the planets and their moons, and so on.
There's a section on each of the planets, and of course lots of coverage of the sun and eclipses of the sun and moon.
It always surprises me that this book doesn't seem to get as much respect in astronomical circles as I think it deserves. Bigger and Better than ever

The new 4th edition of this field guide has been expanded by 100 pages, and the star maps are now in color. It has been updated, with new and better photos. A little more pricey than the previous edition, but the added and enhanced content makes it a tremendous value.
A terrific introduction to astronomy that deserves a place in every star-gazer's library.

This manual is a textbook, academic in nature, full of research and detail. If you're an MBTI facilitator and you need to have a good understanding of the theory and research supporting MBTI, this may be a good investment. If you're just a type junkie looking for a good read about MBTI, I'm not sure I'd recommend this (unless you're an NT, and you like acquiring knowledge for no particular reason).

The book is organized as follows:
1. Overview / Differences between MBTI and other instruments
2. Construction, development, revision of MBTI instrument
3. Theory behind MBTI
4. Understanding the 16 types
5. Administering the MBTI
6. Interpreting results and verifying type
7. Construction and properties of the MBTI
8. Reliability and measurement precision
9. Validity
10. Use of types in counseling and pschotherapy
11. Use of type in eduction
12. Use of type in career counseling
13. Use of type in organizations
14. Use of type in multicultural settings.

The book provides a fair amount of interesting detail that you won't find elsewhere -- but the detail is of limited use to most folks. Do you really need to know which type is most highly represented among research librarians? And female engineering students? High school basketball coaches? How types correlate with college aptitude test scores?

There are lots of charts and graphs and detailed information -- it's interesting, but it will be of little practical use to most casual users of MBTI. (As an NT, however, I find it fascinating -- as knowledge in and of itself has value.)

This is a fully referenced psychology textbook on the Myers Briggs Type Indicator. Essential reference for accredited administrators of the instrument. Also for anyone researching or otherwise writing about the MBTI. There are articles out there even in peer reviewed journals raising pretty facile objections to type theory, all of which are thoroughly dealt with in this work and its a shame the authors didnt consult it first.

Jones has created an engaging set of characters and found a new use for many of the appurtenances of fairy talesseven league boots and invisible cloaks, among others. At times, the action becomes so complex that readers may have to go back to see what actually happened, and at the end so many loose ends have to be tied up at once that it's dizzying. Completely different than the MOVIE!

If you are familiar with the movie that came out, I must say, this is COMPLETELY different. Yes...its mostly the same in the beginning but other than that, much of the plot is different as well as the ending. I really loved this book and love Howl's character. Its a "feel good" book that gets you hooked right away.

Summary: A young girl gets vexed by an evil witched to lives as a 90 year old woman. She travels out to meet with her sister and stumbles upon Howl's castle and decides to take refuge from the bitter cold within. She then meets a fire demon who offers to break the spell on her, as long as she can break the spell that is on him.

There were a couple things in the movie that I didnt like and that didn't make sense to me until I read the book....If you don't like spoilers then dont read below because here is a minor spoiler that explains part of the movie:

In the movie, at times when Sophie would be sleeping or felt happyness, you would see her appearance transform into a young girl again. Then she'd suddenly change back to an old woman again. Why is that???? Well in the book, you find out that Sophie has always felt like a 90 year old woman because of her bland clothes and life. Sophie has magical capabilities that she doesn't realize until the very end. When you see her as a youthful girl, it is because she feels young at heart. She often tells herself that being an old woman suites her and this is what her appearance becomes as a result if her own will. There. Now the animation makes sense.

I liked the book more that the movie and will purchase other novels by Diane Wynne Jones.

Easy, fun read.

Like many other reviewers, I read this book after watching the film. I loved the film but felt some plot points were left unexplained so I picked up this book to get the full story.

I liked the characters, I felt both Sophie and Howl were very relatable. The writing is clever especially the contrast in how Sophie describes Howl when she's young and when she's old, and the introduction of Howl's homeland. I felt sucked into Sophie's anguish over her curse and her relationship with Howl. Like many other readers have said, you fall in love with Howl despite all of his flaws, he bears them well. Overall, It was a fun easy read.

I deducted one star because despite the book filling in the plot holes left from the movie, it has holes of its own. The book leaves many unanswered questions and the desire for more details on certain points. The book also ends very abruptly. Nobody wants an ending to drag on but I was hoping for a little more in the development of Howl and Sophie's relationship. At the end it's almost as if they fall in love because that's what characters in books do. There were many points of missed potential.

It's my all time favorite

This is my favorite book in the whole world. I've actually bought two copies because the first one I read so many times the binding broke and the pages started falling out. It's a heartwarming story of a younge girl who doesn't believe she will have good fortune in her life because she is the eldest of 3 daughters. A spell is cast on her which turns her old and she has to figure out how to lift it. A tale of believing in yourself and being capable of things you don't even realize. It's witty and you find yourself loving the characters. It's easy to read and I can read the whole thing in a day if I don't do anything else. I've read it about 20 times and it never gets old. I would recommend the book to anyone (I'm 24 and first read the book when I was about 15) it's a great story and very family friendly if you're buying it for child in school still. You can't go wrong reading it at least once

Must Have for M&As Practitioners

Outstanding text on M&As, very comprehensive. it touches upon all aspsects of the deals from strategy/synergies, types of mergers to valuation, antitrust legislation and HR issues. I really like the focus on European deals in addition to the US one. The section on defence strategies is by itself worth the price of the book.

The information is up to date and it is a book where also the notes at the end of the chapters add value. It is definetely aimed at people with business experience or/and MBA students.
Such a shame it is not available in Kindle version. One of the best books on M&As on the market (and I have read a lot of them!).

The only minor issue is that there is not a list of the cases presented in the book and if you read something of interest with regards to a case you have to search in the entire book as there is no index.

must read!

Just finished this 800-pages book about M&A...loaded and supported by purely research papers on M&A, take over history. Must read and very objective.
