Great read on Hispanic Americans

Just finished the book. It is extremely thorough and filled with many important details of who Latinos are, what they think and where they are going. Authors draw on an extensive array of survey (polling) data and they collaborate with about a dozen other scholars from across the country. This is the definitive volume on Hispanic Americans and politics. I highly recommend to policy makers, campaign strategists, and anyone interested in the future of our country.

A timeless story that is very relevant for today...

I give the author a lot of credit. It is very difficult for a person to write a book from the viewpoint of the opposite sex. The contents of the story were relatable and it was interesting to see the biblical references included. Glen Dueck writes a timeless story that is very relevant for today and speaks to the plight of many young women in our current society who choose to go their own way instead of God's way.

Simple brilliance punctuated with suspect concepts

This was my text for Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary's Survey of Christian Doctrine (THEO 510). The book coincides with video lectures Dr. Towns recorded. Dr. Towns hails from a mild dispensational stance that believes in pretrib/premil eschatology, all to which I agree. He is conservative in theology, and, I believe, sound in major concepts. He holds a high view of Scripture, which shines through in its use in this text.

This is the second class I have taken under Dr. Towns, and both times he wrote the textbook. The other was an Evangelism and Church Growth class, and I am happy to say that this text (Theology for Today) is MUCH, MUCH better than the other text. Theology for Today has only minor grammatical, spelling and formatting issues. But, for the price (between $70 and $100 depending on where you buy...I paid $77 + s/h), you would expect a perfectly polished text. This text is actually bound professionally, unlike some of his other texts which were put together with plastic binding found at Kinko's (literally). The outline format is haphazard at times.

I said in the title that this text was simple brilliance punctuated with suspect concepts. Let me start with the positive first. Dr. Towns explains complex issues with clarity and provides very useful lists of evidence supporting theologies, such as the prophecies foretelling of Christ. There are great exegetical concepts cataloged in Towns' text that are usually left out of other theology texts. He frequently references Strong, Hodge and Scofield (at least much more than other authors.) On the other hand, Dr. Towns states several times in his course that definitive answers can be found for some highly debatable concepts. It is under these debatable concepts that he tends to lose me. He makes some sweeping generalizations in his chapters on demonology, satanology and angelology that have tenuous Scriptural support. Long-story-short, he goes confidently out on a limb and doesn't give enough Scriptural support in these chapters. Likewise, while not a Calvinist or an Arminian, he uses mostly Calvinistic writers' critiques of Arminianism. This leads to a narrow straw man view of Arminianism. He makes some claims of science in his very very short intro to the creation/evolution debate and he does so without references. To me, this is poor form, as critiques of science without references to some reliable source are of limited value. He has plenty of sources listed on other topics, and I wondered why he didn't reference his short foray into science. (In his book, his science is decent, but in the video he confused the big bang theory with the theory of the Cambrian explosion, so I would like to see his sources on other things regarding science.)

This text includes a glossary, an index of persons and an index of Scripture.

If you can get this text used at half the price of a new book (preferably somewhere in the $30 to $40 range), it is worth adding to your library. While I will rely on my copy of Erickson's "Christian Theology" and other theologies before this text, Theology for Today will remain on my shelf, and I will look to it for reference when situations dictate.

I am not going to go into any detail with the book as that has been done extensively. However, it must be known that Theology for Today is an introductory theology book. Meaning, it will convey and advocate some concepts that are not totally clear, while condemning others without giving a fuller explanation. Again, it is not an advanced systematic theology (by the way, neither is Grudem's). This book was designed for undergraduates to spoon-feed their beliefs without necessarily having to weigh ALL of the evidence. That will come later in other, deeper theology classes. So before condemning this book, consider the context in which it was written. For students who know practically nothing about theology. Change your major to theology and you will go deeper to what you are looking for. Then go to seminary and go even deeper than that and deal with the really hard issues. Towns, Grudem, and Erricson (Christian Theology) all have the same goal, just do it different ways. Town's may be the lesser of the three, but it does not deserve the trash can by any means.It is not a four or five volume book on theology.

About the Author

About the Author
John Herron thinks of himself as a “meta-researcher”, a person who researches the research. He doesn’t do medical studies, he finds them, digests them, and translates them for his readers. John began this meta-research not out of desire, but necessity. He had been sick for many years with intestinal, stomach, and various other issues that doctors were helpless to cure. Thus he began doing his own research, not browsing the thousands of self-help websites, but scouring published medical and scientific research studies. This meta-research led him to not only find many potentially helpful natural supplements that had great potential to eliminate gut infections, but also to herbs and foods that can heal the damage done by these infections. What resulted was a new understanding of what needed to be done, and in what order, to heal his own health issues, a healing protocol. John started sharing this information with some people he met on Facebook that had similar issues, many of them, on their own accord, started testing his theories and reporting back. When their results matched his own experiences he knew he was on to something. This resulted in his first book, “The Gut Health Protocol”. So far, So good!

At the risk of divulging TMI, I've been diagnosed with GERD and IBS and having some serious gastrointestinal issues. This book provides the blueprint I've been searching for to get healthy again. I've just started reading and implementing the advice given in the book so can't say long term, but just starting with step one - eating/drinking natural probiotic foods such as Kefir and increasing my probiotic intake overall - have already helped tremendously this week!

Yesterday I read about the diet, downloaded the safe/unsafe foods list from the website, ate only safe foods and this morning for the first time in months I did not wake up with gas, bloating, diarrhea and nausea! I love how all the information the author provides is backed up with scientific research. I also love that the author isn't trying to sell me a bunch of products. He provides information about what has worked for him, and that's great, but he also invites the reader to go natural and make or grow their own or find their own best product brands. He's not trying to sell me a brand he gets a commission on, so I feel I can trust him more.

There is plenty of support, too, from the website to Facebook, a helpful community is growing around the protocol.

It had not occurred to me that all my other issues from obesity to psoriatic arthritis to fibromyalgia to diabetes may all be connected to the same root issue - an unhealthy and unbalanced gastrointestinal environment. I'm very excited to build on this start and improve my health. So far, so good!

Great Practical Guide to Better Health! Must Read!

So much of our health is related to our gut. If things go wrong there it can cause a cascade of other problems down the road. This is an excellent book written by someone who went to a lot of trouble researching the topic to get to the bottom of his problem with gut health. Most doctors treat GERD or SIBO with prescription drugs which only treat symptoms and never fully resolve the problem. If you have yeast infection of the gut, most doctors won't acknowledge that it can even be possible unless you have AIDS. This book goes deeper into dealing with causes and taking action with diet and supplements. Not only are there foods which you should eat for gut health, there are definite foods, drinks and food additives that you should avoid. By making changes to my diet and adding herbal and nutritional supplements according to the protocol laid out in this book, I have made tremendous progress in regaining my heath and well-being. I still have a way to go. Leaky gut and/or inflamed intestines will take more time to fully heal than the time it took to get out of whack. I am on the road to full recovery and I will never go back to my former eating habits and lifestyle. I want to personally thank the author for researching and detailing such a fine resource.

Best Money I've Ever Spent On a Book!

I have been battling SIBO, SIFO, IBS, constipation... you name it, for several years (some things my whole life) and this book has seriously turned my life around in a matter of 6 weeks. I am a huge researcher and with experiencing little to no help from doctors test after test, I now try very hard to advocate for myself. John has taken all the research I have read over the last year and brilliantly organized it in this easy to follow protocol. I have been following it to a T and for the first time in forever I don't have a pregnant looking belly, have become regular, sleep better, become hungry again, don't have acid reflex, my hair is growing back, I don't randomly itch all over, reduced brain fog and anxiety, lower pain, improved Thyroid... I mean you name it! I can't remember the last time I felt this good. Everything has improved. Yes, being so strict with eating has it's social downsides but it has certainly been paying off. Buying and taking all the supplements can be overwhelming, especially looking at the bill but in all honesty has been cheaper than any of the awful tests the doctors have tried running on me. I tried 4 rounds of antibiotics prior to this protocol with no success and worsening symptoms. I will continue to follow John's protocol, probably for life. I seriously wish I could have given every dime I've spent on ridiculous tests and specialists right to John, because he deserves it. Thank you, John! PS he has a Facebook forum page and personally responds to endless questions every day, super helpful!
