Managed Services In Less Than a Year!

We entered into the Managed Services arena pretty late, about four years ago now. I wish I had read this in 2010 rather than last year. Had I written this book myself here in New Mexico, it might have been named Managed Services in a Decade. But Karl's book helped me turn that into managed services in a year. All in all, probably the most focused and useful book of half a dozen I've read on the topic. Highly recommended

The author truly knows the subject inside and out! Karl writes in an easy to understand style. I believe that anyone that wants to become a Managed Services provider MUST own this book. Louis Linn, a young Marine in this illustrious division, carried a sketchbook and pencil stub, drawing whenever he could to maintain his sanity in the madness of war. Several years after the Armistice, he used these sketches to write the stories of events that haunted him, that gave him nightmares, that kept him awake at night. Never before published, Linn's memoir recalls his training in Norfolk and Quantico, life in the trenches at Verdun, fighting at the Battle of Belleau Wood, his wounding at Soissons and again at St. Mihiel, and his subsequent hospitalization. Throughout, his sketches and woodcuts portray the action, providing a vivid account of the war from the trenches.

About the Author
Louis C. Linn attended the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Art and the New York Art Students' League after the war. His Eastern North America's Wildflowers was published after his death in 1978.

Linn's service chronology

(From USMC muster rolls and AEF casualty rolls) Linn enlisted in the USMC on June 8, 1917. He joined the 77th MG Co, 6th MG Bn after recruit training. Linn was assigned as a company messman June 1-30, 1918. He was WIA July 19 by a gun shot wound to his right chest at Soissons and rejoined the 77th MG Company on Aug 27. At St Mihiel he was either slightly wounded by a concealed grenade (muster roll) or received a gun shot wound in his right arm and/or right thigh (conflicting entries in the casualty roll) and was in a series of field hospitals, ending up in Orleans in Dec 1918. He was in the St Aignan Casual Company Feb 1-28, 1919. He joined the 203rd Casual Company at Quantico, VA on March 8, 1919. He was promoted to Cpl in May 1919.

A Great First Hand Account

A great first hand account by a twice wounded Marine enlisted man who was there. He doesn't pull any punches and tells it like it was even at his own expense. Linn comments on the endless mud and marches and the horrors of war. Along with the horrors there are also moments of humor and light heartedness. For some reason he has chosen to slightly alter all the names in his narration but these have been corrected for us along with notes putting the chapters into historical and geographical persective by B.J. Omanson. This book is an easy read and hard to put down. A good investment for those interested in WWI Marine Corps History.

I am using this book this year at UCLA in the mathematics department for our Math 3ABC series. WE are 'trying it out " ....I am using it for my students only in my lectures , Math 3A, Math 3B and Math 3C . And we are evaluating the book for possible adoption.

First of all, any one who says this book is "s--t " is not expressing his viewpoint very well , it seems sort of lazy and that is perhaps what this person is . It could also be the case that they have never been taught how to disagree without using these useless phrases .....or they have never been taught how to disagree with intelligence. Poor student ....will never get anywhere being such a sad sort of person who can only complain with such words.
I find the book interesting, fun, full of GREAT ideas and very motivating . My students have 85% of the the time said they like the book because it is easy to read and follow, the problems are explained in GREAT detail, the meaning of mathematics is made VERY clear , and they see the answer to " Why do we need to know this ?" . The examples are so excellent ! And they relate to the biology examples very well.
I am so enthusiastic about this book , I am going to recommend the adoption to my department within a few weeks. It has been a GREAT success for my students and me.
OK, some errors always occur in a first edition, But I have a list of them ( short list ) and I will send them to the publisher. But his Book is very , very excellent and I want to use it AGAIN. ! So, to say it short, GREAT CALC textook for LIFE SCIENCES !!!!

Do not recommend

I am a student in a class where this book is being tried out and from my point of view it is a very poor textbook. First problem is the high cost for what it is. I'm fine paying $200 ($150+ $50 for a student solutions book) for pre-med textbooks but typically when I put in that type of money I also get online practice and a better product in the book. The drill problems are poorly worded and the solutions in the student manual (which is probably the biggest scam of this bundle) do not do a good job explaining how solutions are reached. The only reason that I can do the drill problems is because they mirror the examples almost verbatim but, again, the examples do a poor job explaining the logic behind procedures. I've had much better calculus textbooks in the past, but then again I still hope that this one is adopted purely so that I can sell it to the poor bastards that take this class next year.

I'll admit that my professor publicly stated tin class hat she knew the authors which may have biased me against it, but I honestly hated it before she told us that as well.

Carefully written and beautifully produced book

I am writing this comment in response to the "Terrible Textbook" comment posted on March 31, 2014. I am one of the authors and, to date, many of our colleagues who have evaluated this book like it very much and plan to use it in their classrooms. It is true that on page 463, in Problem Set 6.3, we inadvertently had the units mg/h instead of mg/L in three of the stated problems. This has now been corrected in the electronic version of the book. It is not true, however, that the answer to #31 on page 489 is incorrect. All the material in the book has been thoroughly checked several times over by three authors and paid readers. It is very difficult in a 700+ page calculus text, with literally hundreds of places on each page where an error can occur, to be completely error free; but we have worked very hard to try and find all errors and believe our text is virtually error free. Curiously, given the tone, profanity, and unfounded accusations of laziness in the aforementioned review, for some reason the reviewer seems to be very angry. If you are interested in this text for your class, please contact our Editors at Wiley and request a review copy -- and then judge for yourself. I am confident you will find our book is a carefully and beautifully produced contribution that may well serve the needs of your students better than the several excellent competing life science calculus texts that are currently available.

This book is like an MFA program in poetry in 410 pages.

I have taught this book in its various editions in the Writers' Program at UCLA for many years. It is simply the best textbook I have ever found to demystify poetry and inspire would-be poets. Not only is the text clear, cogent and lively, but the examples of poetry used -- from Sharon Olds' "Sex Without Love" and Norman Dubie's "A Blue Hog", to Yusef Komunyakaa's "Sunday Afternoons" and Richard Wilbur's "Love Calls Us to the Things of the World" (plus classics such as W.C. Williams' "The Red Wheelbarrow" and Robert Frost's "The Road Not Taken") -- are uniformly first rate. If you want to learn how to write poetry well and do not live near an urban writing center, you can do no better than to buy this book.

Seek an earlier edition

I have a previous edition of this book which I've really enjoyed, but something seems to have washed out of this current offering. The book is dedicated to Robert Wallace, who died during the compilation of edition #4, and I'm wondering if the book didn't go to press in a daze. This edition seems slicker, perkier, and less succinct than it's siblings. Still useful and nutritious but in that low-salt, high-fiber way that I don't want my poems or books about poems to have. My suggestion is to try an earlier edition.
In my daydreams, every poet has read this book (edition #2 I can vouch for), as well as the books "Western Wind" and "In the Palm of Your Hand" and gorgeous, flexing poems are lying about everywhere. It could happen.

If you want to read a text on writing poetry, this is it

I took an advanced poetry course from Michelle Boiseeau who taught from this text. She was enlightening, helpful, and inspiring. The book was more so.
I re-read the book after taking the course and found it even more helpful in reflecting on the course.
Michelle Boisseau is one of our most talented and hard-working poets. Her approach is as clearly revealed in this book as any poet could hope to impart.
Don't read this book expecting to come out a poet, but read this book and plan on learning a great deal about the process of writing poetry.
